2023 College Football Schedule

The 2023 college football schedule boasts many highly anticipated matches. Games that could determine conference standing and historic rivalries that will draw crowds will all feature prominently.

Here is a look at the best games from Week 2.
USC vs. Notre Dame

USC’s final season in the Pac-12 presents an intriguing clash against Notre Dame on 2023’s college football schedule, potentially setting up an explosive showdown between these teams in Week 7. USC hosts Notre Dame for Week 7, where Dillon Gabriel could lead an impressive squad that includes running back tandem Kaytron Allen and Nicholas Singleton as well as sophomore quarterback Dillon Gabriel as part of an efficient attack led by senior defensive back JJ Watt and junior quarterback Isaiah Ealey (of Notre Dame fame). Notre Dame have won two out of three meetings between these teams since USC joined Division 1.

Notre Dame has added to the drama with their first-year coach Sam Hartman leading them back to Stanford Stadium for their return game since 2021; likely earning it a spot on College GameDay’s rotation schedule.

USC begins their 2017-18 Coliseum season against San Jose State on Aug. 26, with nine league games to follow before taking a Thanksgiving weekend bye. That includes visits from Oregon schools and Utah, crosstown rivalry games with UCLA, as well as must-see matchups against Arizona – one of many must-watch contests this season – plus USC’s visit to Oregon State this October should also make headlines this fall.
Florida vs. Florida State

With less than 100 days remaining until college football’s return, major TV networks began unveiling the 2023 season on Wednesday. Although opening weekend may not feature many headline-making matches such as Notre Dame hosting Navy at Dublin Stadium, major games were announced that could make headlines this season.

Florida State will open the 2018 season in Orlando against LSU, an opponent they have defeated seven out of nine times including an epic comeback win at the Allstate Louisiana Kickoff in 2022 when FSU blocked an extra point with just seconds left on the clock to defeat LSU and advance in the tournament. This matchup should draw national interest and may appear on ESPN’s College GameDay coverage during Week 1.

Florida State College Football

After their home opener, Florida State travels to Boston College and Clemson in their second season under Billy Napier; each team should improve significantly this year; an FSU victory against either team could go a long way towards reinstating FSU to national relevance.
Coastal Carolina vs. Army

Coastal Carolina’s transition to FBS makes this 2023 matchup even more intriguing. The Chanticleers hope to avenge a 42-7 loss to Sam Houston State as newcomers in Conference USA; yet will also face an old rival that has made an impressionful statement about itself nationally.

ESPN will unveil their 2023 schedule Wednesday with two major afternoon ABC contests: NC State will travel to Notre Dame while Miami faces Texas A&M. Both games should garner plenty of media coverage.

Ole Miss vs Tulane on Sept. 2, giving Willie Fritz’s Rebels an opportunity to avenge last year’s 61-21 Cotton Bowl loss; Army’s visit to Louisiana Monroe on Sept. 9 could provide another Group of Five shootout, giving the military academy an excellent start in Sun Belt play and drawing College GameDay coverage of this showdown.
Michigan vs. Ohio State

ABC/ESPN has an outstanding Week 2 schedule to kick off the weekend. They feature four top games – led by Iowa at Iowa State as a prime time slot contest that should draw significant audiences from both states. In the ACC, Notre Dame-NC State will provide some thrills without detracting too heavily from CBS’ Texas-Alabama contest on Sunday.

Ohio State’s season-opening trip to Michigan should be one of the must-watch games of 2023. Although Ohio State is expected to emerge victorious from this rivalry game, there remains plenty of excitement and intrigue as both teams look for ways to emerge as Big Ten champ. Michigan currently reigns supreme, while last season Ohio State knocked them off by an impressive margin. Michigan will then face Michigan State, Nebraska and Iowa before their fourth appearance in a three-year College Football Playoff run begins in 2024.
Kansas vs. Texas

Texas looks to rebound from an embarrassing defeat at TCU and win back their Big 12 crown against Kansas this Sunday. Quarterback Sam Ehlinger earned Wuerffel Trophy semifinalist status last season and should lead an offense that can match Kansas’ aggressive defense.

This matchup will take place at 3 p.m. ET and be aired live on ESPN2 instead of ABC as initially planned. Jon Sciambi and Dick Vitale will call the action for ESPN, with cord cutters having access to streaming via Sling TV app.

This matchup could be one of the top-10 matchups of college football this season. Since 2022, neither side has won on the road against each other; thus the victor will gain an edge in any potential BCS Championship contests that follow this contest.

Fox Sports may choose this matchup as its inaugural Big Noon game under their new contract with the conference, though Fox may need to adjust their schedule in order to include another league’s game (Utah at Baylor or Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule’s home debut against Wisconsin are among several possibilities).
